Produced with public and private funding, "AIDS in the Barrio" goes well beyond the scientific facts of AIDS transmission. It addresses the cultural attitudes and economic conditions that encourage the spread of AIDS, including the macho attitude that ridicules condom use and the high unemployment that draws people into drug abuse. Filmed in Philadelphia, USA, in a hispanic majority neighborhood.
The film project was initiated by Alba Martinez, an attorney with Community Legal Services at Kensington and Allegheny avenues, whose father, a university professor, died in Puerto Rico of AIDS three years ago.
